Newark Levels is a celebration of music throughout the contemporary history of Newark’s arts and culture. Split across three floors, poets, singers, and musicians will showcase their talents while highlighting various genres of music that have impacted Newark; and has made Newark the arts and cultural hub it is today. From jazz to soul and hip-hop, we will take you through the auditory history of our great city. Featuring performances from Sophia’s Daughter, Janétza Miranda, and Mikee Mula.
Sophia’s Daughter is a Haitian-Jamaican-American writer, performance artist, organizer, and flower child based in Newark, NJ. Her mission is to entertain, enlighten, inform, empower, and reconnect humanity to its humanity.
Janétza Miranda is a Newark Native who combines the traditions of Jazz, Soul, Rhythm & Blues, Bolero, Bomba y Plena, Hip Hop, & More into a remixed sonic delight of vocalizations and rhythmic proclamations that transport you to a space that is suspended in time. Janétza has traveled across the nation for NBC’s “The Voice” (Season 4), where she made it to Top 18 out of 60,000 artists who auditioned.
New Jersey based MC, known by the stage name “Mikee Mula”, plans to leave his imprint on the hip-hop world. Hailing from Orange, New Jersey, Mikee Mula discovered his rhyming prowess at a young age, performing at local events and battling other MCs. His lyrics are vivid, hard-hitting, and introspective, setting him apart in an often crowded space.
