North to Shore presents The Other Side of Newark at Newark Symphony Hall on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 6 PM.
This free concert is a great opportunity to experience the vibrant music scene in Newark and features a video screening event and live performances by multi-platinum producer Jerry Wonda, West Ward Councilman Dupre ‘Doitall’ Kelly and local artists Fatima B, Monique the Star, Kellz Merlin, J1.DA, Unicorn 151, Khalil Jibran, Haze Heffner, Dangerous MBK, Bigga Bz and special guests.
It is also a great way to learn about the city’s rich history and culture.
Born in Croix-des-Bouquets, on the Island of “Haiti”, Jerry Wonda Duplessis is the third child of his parents, Rosita & Reynold. He recounts many stories of life growing up in Haiti and his family. The discovery of a bass guitar at his father’s neighborhood shop was the start of his love for the instruments that earned him the nickname “Te-Bass” meaning little Bass. He is a self-taught musician and music producer.
In the 1980’s Jerry migrated to the US, where he was raised by his father and his aunt, who was also Wyclef Jean’s mother. Together with his brothers and cousins, he started to live his musical dreams in Irvington, most prominently from the basement of his father’s house in East Orange, famously known as the Booga Basement.
The Other Side of Newark collaborative album explores themes of anti-violence, peace building and unity in Newark, New Jersey.
