Choy

Choy is a Caribbean American recording artist that was born and raised NY and lives in NJ. His Trinidadian culture deeply influenced his upbringing and musical journey. Choy is a storyteller and through his music, he seeks to convey the powerful notion that each individual is enough, worthy and imperfectly perfect, encompassing the power in both their shadows and their light.

Aja Moyé

As an accomplished vocalist and songwriter based in the Metro NYC area, Aja Moyé is surely leaving her mark on her own terms. At a young age, she was exposed to music legends the smooth Al Green, The Isley Brothers with their killer melodies, and the late siren, Whitney Houston. Aja honed her gift and, in time, chose to study at the prestigious Jackie McLean Institute of the Hartt School at the University of Hartford. It was there where she truly began her spiritual journey and rigorous training as an artist.

J Read

J Read is originally from Newark, New Jersey, yet had a very eclectic upbringing. He moved to Bethlehem, PA at the age of 9 where he was introduced to the violin. At the age of 12, his family moved to Charlotte, NC, where he was then enrolled at the boarding school Milton Hershey in Hershey, PA. After graduating, he moved back to North Carolina to attend North Carolina State University where he majored in economics. It was there when he began his journey as a recording artist, and released his first mixtape. After graduating with a degree in economics, he landed a position at SONY music as a royalties analyst where he continued to release music. After two-and-a-half years with SONY, he took a leap of faith and decided to pursue music full time. He has since become a local phenomenon, grinding and striving on his endeavors to become a worldwide household name.

Nicole Soul

Nicole Soul, a Nevisian American comedian, writer and award-winning TV host, who graced screens as the lead host of Zappos LIVE for seasons one and two. Her one-woman show, The Evolution Will Not Be Televised, debuted to a sold-out crowd at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. She’s been featured at prestigious festivals like Lysistrata, Black Girl Giggles and Laugh Riot Grrrlll. As the Chief Experience Officer of Antidepressants Media, Nicole produces live experiences celebrating Black joy, including variety and comedy shows. Her journey in entertainment began with winning the Miss Black New Jersey Scholarship Pageant, inspiring her acting career and social activism. A Rutgers University honors graduate, she launched her broadcasting career at 90.3 The Core radio station. Prior to comedy, Nicole founded In Carrie’s Closet Vintage Boutique and embarked on a nationwide vlogging tour fueled by her love for thrifting. On Juneteenth 2021, she gained dual citizenship in Nevis, West Indies.

Rasha Jay

Rasha Jay was called “an artist bringing soul to modern rock” by Vents Magazine upon her debut. The NJ resident is a powerhouse singer who writes songs that showcase her raw, soaring voice and fuse her love for alternative, rock and soul. Rasha has performed at festivals all over the tri-state, and recently won SongwritingUK Magazine’s songwriting competition. Her latest album Muscle Memory is available now.

Evelyn Tejeda

Evelyn Tejeda is originally from the Dominican Republic. She was a semi-finalist at Dominicana’s Got Talent, a founding member of the Contemporary Dance National Company of the Dominican Republic directed by Marianela Boan and has toured in festivals around the world. Tejeda was awarded for her piece Imposible Explicar in the Grand Prize of Dance Quisqueya, Audience Award of Award Solo Coreografico USA 2021, FIDCDMX 2021, UNION PDX 2021, XVII Encuentro de Danza Ecuador, Bates Dance Festival USA and EDANCO. Tejeda was invited by the choreographer Maura Morales to her company in Germany and by the French choreographer David Milome to dance 2014 and again for 1-year contract in 2022 for touring around France and Luxembourg, and continued touring at Festival Internacional EDANCO Dom. Rep., and UNION PDX in Portland, OR.

Charisa the Violin Diva & Strings Nation: Hip Hop Meets Jazz Strings

Charisa the ViolinDiva, soul jazz violinist/vocalist has devoted her career to challenging every preconception of what a violinist can accomplish in contemporary music. Classically trained, her diversity has allowed her to travel the world, recording and performing with as Lauryn Hill, Vivian Green, Kim Burrell and Cyndi Lauper, to name a few. Charisa is also a teaching artist in public schools. She has developed the New Urban Strings Curriculum targeted at reaching young minority string players; which reaches 200 Black and Latino students annually. Charisa has proudly called Newark, NJ her home for the last ten years with her producer and drummer James Rouse. She has collaborated with several Newark organizations and cultural icons, including NJPAC, Bethany Baptist, Newark Symphony Hall, Lincoln Park Festival Jazz Day, the Oliver Street School, the Shani Baraka Resource Center, Weequahic Park Gospel Series Concerts with Liz Black and WBLS, Essex County Cultural Affairs Department and many more. On the national stage, she has won the Apollo Amateur Night Competition, performed for senators and dignitaries, rocked next to Patti Labelle and Misty Copeland on BET Black Girls Rock!, won the McDonald’s Gospelfest Competition with her unique fusion of soul, jazz, hot pink violin and voice. Charisa has a Newark based boutique music company, Angaza Music Group, that specializes in everything strings – from Bridgerton-style string quartet StringsNation, to the hip hop meets jazz orchestra featured in the inaugural North to Shore Festival in 2023. StringsNation has recorded and performed with everyone from Ashanti, Ryan Leslie, Vivian Green, Demi Lovato and Lauryn Hill, to many many more. Maurice Chestnut, is a young tap dancer who is prominent among the next generation of hard-hitting rhythm-tappers. He began dancing at the age of five with Pepsi Bethel jazz dancer Alfred Gallman. He turned professional at the age of nine when he joined Deborah Mitchell’s New Jersey Tap Ensemble. Quickly recognized as a rising young star, he was featured on the Sally Jesse Raphael Show “My Kid’s A Star” segment, where he proudly proclaimed that he loved to dance and that he would keep doing it “until I die.” After winning a gold medal in the NAACP Act-So Competition, he was crowned “Top Dog Performer” at the Apollo Theater. At age 14, the Newark Star Ledger named him “one of the 20 New Jersey faces to watch for in the new millennium.” In 2003 at the age of 19, Chestnut joined the national touring company of Savion Glover’s Broadway hit Bring In ‘Da Noise, Bring In ‘Da Funk. He continued to work with Glover as a member of his Improvography and Bare Soundz tours, as well as performing in such Glover shows as Classical Savion, Tappin’ Into Monk and Invitation to the Dancer. In addition to performing with his own band, Chestnut has toured, as a special guest artist, with jazz artists Christian McBride, Cyrus Chestnut, Thelonius Monk III and the Geri Allen Trio. As a featured soloist and choreographer, Chestnut develops his style of “playing tap” as a “live instrument,” seamlessly weaving complex dance steps to interplay with musical notes to create a powerful and distinctive energy that resonates with audiences. While Chestnut has been inspired by such legendary tap dancers as the Nicholas Brothers and Jimmy Slyde, he feels the urgency to connect with his own generation’s urban culture, dancing with truth, soul, and power to inspire the next generation of rhythm tap dancer.

Company of Collaborative Artists (CoCA)

Camille Moten Rennie is originally from Somerset, New Jersey and began her professional dance training with PHILADANCO’s second company while earning a BFA in dance from Temple University. She went on to perform extensively in concert dance, musical theater and Latin ballroom as a freelance artist. Five years later she was selected to join the inaugural MFA cohort of the Mason Gross Dance Department at Rutgers University. For her thesis concert, Camille choreographed and produced the evening-length dance production of Ella’s Trip (2019), and subsequently published an excerpt of her written work in the January 2020 issue of Black Dance Magazine. She also served as assistant choreographer to Andre DeShields for Tony Award-winning Crossroads Theatre Company’s production of Ain’t Misbehavin’ (2018) at New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), and later served as choreographer for the company’s 2019 production of A Christmas Carol at New Brunswick Performing Arts Center (NBPAC) in their grand opening season. Camille’s choreography has since been presented by Dance New Jersey, Project for Empty Space (PES), Mana Contemporary Arts, Newark Dances, WestFest Dance, Rutgers University, Drew University, Stockton University, BAAD! Bronx, and coLAB Arts, along with many other schools and institutions of dance. She was awarded a 2024 Individual Artist Fellowship by Mid Atlantic Arts and the New Jersey State Council of the Arts. Camille currently produces dance works, movement classes and artistic collaborations through the programming and immersive events of the Company of Collaborative Artists (CoCA) – a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dance company she founded in 2021. She has a passion for teaching movement and servicing all levels of movers as a university department adjunct professor in dance and somatics, a wellness practitioner and retreat curator, and a certified yoga instructor (RYT 200-hour).
